Armonk, a hamlet in the town of North Castle, is in the northeastern sector of Westchester County. It is bordered by Connecticut to its east and is approximately 36 miles from midtown Manhattan via Metro-North. Whether by train, I-684 or more local routes, Armonk has easy access to all major sources of corporate employment and transportation. Westchester County Airport is 10 minutes away and international airports are within an hour’s drive.
A newly constructed and quaint plaza, Armonk Square, right in the center of town, is lined with boutiques and eateries and of course, a bank, enhancing the many of shops and excellent restaurants along the downtown area. The charming light posts with colorful floral arrangements swinging in the breeze and the sitting benches that line the center make this a very charming and upscale place to live, shop and visit. A small but special school district, Byram Hills offers a superior education for each child with an emphasis on high quality education with a rich curriculum. Children from Kindergarten through second grade attend Coman Hills Elementary School and grades three through five attend Wampus Elementary School. Sixth through eighth attend Harold C. Crittenden Middle School and Byram Hills High School serves grades nine through twelve. The Byram Hills School District serves North Castle and parts of New Castle, Mt. Pleasant, and Bedford and all of the schools are located in Armonk. The school district has been awarded the national “School of Excellence” designation from the US Department of Education.
Armonk is home to the global headquarters of IBM bond insurer MBIA, the Americas headquarters of reinsurer Swiss RE, Business Park, Armonk Square, Wampus Park, North Castle Community Park, Betsy Sluder Nature Preserve, Armonk Fire Department, one of Westchester’s premier country clubs-The Whippoorwill Club, The Windmill Club with its signature Windmill, the landmark iron eagle that spreads it wings at the entrance to Armonk off of Route 22, Landmark and historical site-Smith’s Tavern and home to Armonk’s Historical Society, North Castle Public Library, Equinox Fitness Club and La Quinta Inn.
The quite desirable housing hub is comprised of primarily single family homes, luxury developments, fine estates, new construction and attached single family townhouses.
Armonk hosts several events annually; most notably the Armonk Art Show, a fine arts and crafts show drawing hundreds of visitors from all across the country and sponsored by Friends of North Castle Public Library. “Friends” also sponsors Armonk Players, a community theatre group. The Armonk Chapter of the Lions Club sponsors a Fol-de-Rol, similar to a country fair, drawing local businesses, restaurants and artisans to set up tents and sell their merchandise while games, rides and music are enjoyed by all. The “Frosty the Snowman” parade and wintery street fair is quite popular being Armonk is the birthplace of Frosty! “Downtown Armonk” First Thursday of Every Month, is the newest edition of fun and festivities for the town.
