We first met Merry when our family moved to Westport from New York City. At that time, we were unsure whether we were going to rent or buy a home. I just wanted to pass along some observations I have about my experiences working with Merry. "The answer" is that she is tremendous. And I've now had her help me twice and I recommend friends to go to her. While all that is great, I think there are some subtler points to her way of being that make her incredibly effective.

There are of course the generic strengths that she has like: knows how to help me find the place that' s just right for me, and skilled negotiator when it comes to bargaining / deal making, and patient and calm in the face of unexpected developments. While those are unquestionably strengths of hers, to some degree I think of those things as prerequisites for being a real estate broker. Not having those things is kind of like being an ATM without any cash! You simply can't be in that line of work and having those things doesn't make you great. It just allows you to compete in the game.

Where Merry really separates herself from the pack in this profession is in sense she is able to convey that she was DEEPLY in tune with my feelings at the different points of the process. And because she has an unbelievable radar for the clients varying feelings as they ride their emotional roller coaster, she is always able to modulate her tone, her suggestions, and her pace to match me. I never feel uncomfortable because she seemed to know right where I was in the process and what I needed. Because she pays attention to that stuff. And knows exactly what buttons to push to put me at ease.

Whether I was feeling clueless and confused early on about what exactly I wanted. Whether I was feeling a little overwhelmed by an unexpected panic emotion I was having in the middle of a bid process "oh no I just CAN'T go forward here on this bid because I feel I must be closer to the ocean!"

Other times I was angry at how the seller was behaving (and I have a temper that could have blown the whole thing up). There is such a wide range of emotions that the home buying experience generates. If my agent were tone deaf to my (rapidly) shifting emotional needs, the whole thing wouldn't worked.

I mean maybe I would find a house... but it wouldn't be a good experience. I met Merry 5 years ago when I needed a place to rent, quickly, with my two kids due to a fairly traumatic divorce. (Is there any other kind?)

I think I noticed that about her when she helped me rent. And it's why I had zero hesitation asking her to help me when it was time to buy. And it's why I will send every referral her way that I can manage.

You have a real master of human psychology and human emotional needs there with Merry. It's what sets her apart in my view. I don't want any of this to diminish her technical skills, which are numerous and impressive. But the additional areas where she shines, the ones I focused on in this note, are quite rare in my experience.

I'm writing to commend and thank Merry Hampton for the exceptional work she did on our behalf in helping us to purchase our first home.

My wife Mary and I first met Merry in 2010 when, amidst a career change and relocation, she helped us rent the condo where we had our first child and started our family together. We so appreciated Merry's kind manner and knowledge of the Fairfield county area during that rental search, that there was no doubt we would use her services again when, years later, we began shopping for a house of our own.


But our search was not a simple one: we were geographically constrained by our two commutes, in opposite directions, and had very specific requirements for our family, regarding the safety of our street, the alignment of the floor plan, and the style of architecture that we desired. Merry worked tirelessly to find homes that fit our incredibly specific requests. But more importantly than the homes she showed us, Merry's patience and knowledge in educating us about Fairfield county real estate and the home purchase process were invaluable as we undertook this intimidating endeavor. Even as our preference in towns shifted (first Westport, then Fairfield, then Wilton, ultimately Weston) and we revised our budget, Merry remained optimistic and encouraging that we would find our house.



Ultimately, thanks to her, we did. Merry came to know our family so well (we regularly brought our two year old son along to see potential homes) that she knew our house before we did. "Bring your checkbook," she told us. "I think this is the one."



Her support did not end there, though. Throughout our process, we were repeatedly frustrated by logistical hurdles, unforeseen circumstances, and unreliable service during the inspection and mortgage process. Merry was the one advisor we could always trust.

We've been in our new home for a year, and it's a better fit than either of us ever thought we'd find. I can honestly say that I do not believe we'd have found this house without Merry's hard work and counsel. Anyone hoping to find their dream home in this area would be lucky to work with her.
