West Hartford, Noah Webster’s hometown and a suburb of Connecticut’s capital made the 2010 Kiplinger 10 Best Cities For the Next Decade. “It is on our list because it is transforming itself from a suburb into a destination -- in this case, a regional destination for shopping and dining”. Education is West Hartford’s hallmark, and schools -- both public and private -- are the biggest draw for newcomers to the town. Public schools are top-notch in the state, and Connecticut schools rate among the best in the nation. Three colleges in town up the quotient of highly educated residents -- 57% have a bachelor’s degree or higher, versus 36% for the state.

Three years ago, the town doubled the size of West Hartford Center by adding a new mixed-use real estate development in West Hartford of upscale retail stores, condominium residences and loft apartments. This development is called Blue Back Square, in homage to Webster’s Blue-Backed Spelling Book. The square brought a movie theater, a Crate & Barrel, a Whole Foods Market and an REI to the town’s central shopping and dining district. In West Hartford single-family homes are available for under $200,000 in the south end of the city. The median price is about $300,000. Real Estate in West Hartford near the Center is the most desirable and ranges from $350,000 to $500,000. As with much New England Real Estate, colonial style homes and Cape Code homes are most prevalent, although small estates can be found in The Hartford Golf Club neighborhood and West of Mountain Road.
