KATONAH
Founded with the name Whitlockville, and later renamed for Chief Katonah, an American Indian from whom the land of Bedford was purchased by a group of English colonists, the town changed its name to Katonah and moved to the present site in 1897 when the former site (Old Katonah) was flooded by the construction of the Cross River Reservoir. More than 50 buildings were moved from the old site to the "New Katonah", rolled on logs pulled by horses. Katonah is a progressive community that has protected the charm and appeal of its rural heritage. It is styled as a "village" with one main street where local merchants provide goods and services to the community. There are no chain stores. The surrounding countryside includes the John Jay Homestead, the former home of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Nearby private schools are Montfort Academy, affiliated with the Catholic Church, and the Harvey School, a private day school founded in the 19th century and counts among its alumni, Gary Trudeau of "Doonesbury" fame. Among other well-known people, Martha Stewart and Ralph Lauren live just down the road for the John Jay estate. Katonah, part of the excellent Katonah-Lewisboro school system, is also home to the Katonah Museum, and Caramoor (the Caramoor International Music Festival) both of which support an active artistic and cultural community.
